Elsie Miller, 90, Selby, SD, died Saturday, April 2, 2011 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at the Selby United Methodist Church with Pastor Elizabeth Jassmann leading the service. Burial will follow at Selby Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5:00-9:00 PM Monday, April 4, 2011 at Lien Funeral Chapel, Selby, and resume 10:00 AM Tuesday at the Church.

Elsie Esther Schuetzle, daughter of Martha (Ritter) and Jacob Schuetzle, was born at her family’s farm west of Mound City in Campbell County, SD, on September 11, 1920. Her formal education consisted of Campbell County Rural School through 8th grade and Herreid High School Class of 1938. She then went on to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD. She married Richard C. Miller at Reno, NV, on February 27, 1944, while Richard was serving in the Army. Upon his discharge, the couple settled in Selby and Elsie began a teaching career that spanned 29 years. She taught at South Dakota country schools in Campbell and Walworth Counties, in Akaska, and finished her career at the Selby School, retiring in 1982. She and Richard continued living in Selby and for 28 years wintered in Raymondville, TX. Elsie belonged to the Selby United Methodist Church, was a 50 year member of Eastern Star, a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, was a past member of the South Dakota and National Education Associations, and the Selby Golf Association. Elsie respected and appreciated her students. She enjoyed flowers and flower gardening, cooking, reading, crocheting, and attending Church. Elsie especially cherished the time she spent with her family.

She is survived by Richard, her husband of 67 years; two sons, Gene Richard Miller of Selby and John Brian (Jennifer) Miller of Rapid City, SD; one daughter, Patricia Kay (Wayne) Mundt of Spearfish, SD; six brothers, Albert Schuetzle of College Park, MD, Clayton Schuetzle of Clinton, Iowa, Tim Schuetzle of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Harlo Schuetzle of White Bear Lake, MN, Hartson Schuetzle of Sturgis, SD, and Gary Schuetzle of Northfield, MN; 9 Grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father on March 27, 1983, her mother on January 20, 1985, two brothers (Burnell and Wesley), one sister (Gloria Hahne), and an infant grandson (Cole Miller).

Casketbearers will be six of her nine grandchildren. Eric Mundt of Highlands Ranch, CO, Nicholas Mundt of Brookings, SD, Zachery Mundt of Huntington Beach, CA, Luke Mundt of Costa Mesa, CA, and Blair Miller and Tara Miller of Rapid City. Honorary bearers will be Mrs. Miller’s former students. Ushers will be Steve Zabel, Jerry Stiegelmeier, and Tom Fiedler. The organist will be Sharon Wolff and the congregation will sing “Holy, Holy, Holy”, “In the Garden”, “The old Rugged Cross”, and “How great thou Art”.
