Dorothy Mertz, 88, Bowdle, died Thursday, March 8, 2012 at the Bowdle Nursing Home. Interment will be 10:00 AM Monday, March 12th at Redeemer Lutheran Church Cemetery, Bowdle, with a memorial service scheduled for 11:00 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bowdle. Organist will be Barbara Gullerud and the congregation will sing “Amazing Grace, how sweet the Sound”, “I’m but a stranger Here”, “Asleep in Jesus”, “A mighty Fortress is our God”, and “Now the Light has gone Away” (with Ruth Ann Claeys singing the first verse). Ushers will be Quentin Walz, Blake Eisenbeisz, Randy Giedt, and Steve Giedt.
Visitation will begin 4:00 PM Sunday with a 7:00 PM prayer service at Lien Funeral Home.
Dorothy Martha Giedt, daughter of Katherine (Scherbenski) and Henry Giedt, was born in Edmunds County near Tolstoy, SD on July 30, 1923. She was raised on her parent’s farm two miles SW of Bowdle and attended Odessa Rural School through 8th grade. She attended Bowdle High School, graduating with the Class of 1941. Throughout high school, she was employed at Jones Drug and following her graduation, she clerked at the AAA office in Ipswich, SD. She married Ernest Mertz at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bowdle on August 29, 1943. They settled on Ernest’s parents farm 7 ½ miles NW of Bowdle in Walworth County. In the 1950’s, Dorothy established Mertz Floral. Dorothy and Ernest moved into Bowdle December 1976 and she continued operating the flower shop until August 1979. In September 1979 she earned her life and health line and sold insurance until 2000. Dorothy enjoyed working with people and keeping busy, so when she retired from the insurance business she became a sales representative for Avon Cosmetics, a vocation she continued until September 2009. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and Ladie’s Aide. Dorothy was a 4-H leader for 26 years and a Farmer’s Union Youth leader for 25 years. In the 60’s, she and Ernest belonged to the Bowdle Square Dance Club. She also belonged to the ABC Extension Club, the WALCO Extension Club, and was a member of the Bowdle Senior Citizens. Her hobbies included reading, crocheting, and knitting.
Dorothy is survived by five sons—Ernie J. (Pauline) Mertz of Bowdle, Paul (Rosemary) Mertz of Goodwin, SD, Dean (Debbie) Mertz of Sioux Falls, SD, Michael (Kathy) Mertz of Aberdeen, SD; and Garry (Monica) Mertz of Ellendale, ND, one daughter Ruth Ann (Don) Claeys of Firestone, CO; one sister Eloise Huber of Napa, CA; 16 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father on August 22, 1977, her mother on January 25, 1993, her husband on September 4, 2002, and two brothers—Wardell and Lester (Dick) Giedt.
Casketbearers will be Keith Mertz of Neosho, WI, Joe Claeys of Denver, CO, Adam Mertz of Watertown, Ryan Mertz of Socorre, New Mexico, Nathan Mertz of Watertown, and Tara Hack of Grand Forks, ND.
Honorary bearers will be all the people attending the service.
