Richard Miller, 92, Selby, SD, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at the Selby Good Samaritan Society. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the Selby United Methodist Church with Pastor Elizabeth Jassmann leading the service. Interment, with military graveside rites by the Frederick Schauer American Legion Post No. 100, Selby, SD, will follow at Selby Memorial Gardens. Organist will be Bev Sawinsky and the congregation will sing “The old rugged Cross”, “Abide with Me”, and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. Ushers will be Keith Lemburg and Jerry Stiegelmeier.

Visitation will be prior to the service Saturday at the Church.

Richard Carlton Miller, son of Clara (Admire) and Guy Miller, was born at Aberdeen, SD on May 22, 1920. He lived NE of Aberdeen until age 8 when he moved with his family to Herreid, SD. He completed his education in Herreid, graduating with the HHS Class of 1938. He then served in the Civilian Conservation Corps before entering the United States Army, being inducted April 10, 1942. He was honorably discharged October 15, 1945 and relocated to Selby where his parents were living. Richard then began his career in the US Postal Service. He returned to the Army as a drill sergeant on October 1, 1950 and was discharged July 29, 1951. Richard married Elsie Schuetzle at Reno, NV on February 27, 1944. He continued his career with the Post Office, retiring as the Selby Postmaster in 1980. In retirement, he and Elsie enjoyed 28 winters in Raymondville, TX. Elsie died April 2, 2011 and since July 2011, Richard had resided at the Good Samaritan Society. He belonged to the Selby Methodist Church, was a 60 year Selby Legion member, belonged to the Masonic Lodge where he was feted for 50 years of membership in 1998, was a Shriner, and belonged to the Selby Commercial Club. Richard also was a Selby Volunteer Fireman and served on the Selby School Board. His hobbies included hunting, golf, and most other sports.

Richard is survived by two sons, Gene Richard Miller of Selby and John Brian (Jennifer) Miller of Rapid City, SD; one daughter, Patricia Kay (Wayne) Mundt of Spearfish, SD; nine grandchildren: Eric (Tracy) Mundt of Highlands Ranch, CO, Nicholas Mundt of Brookings, SD, Zachery (Leilah) Mundt of Huntington Beach, CA, Luke (Jessica) Mundt of Costa Mesa, CA, Chara Miller of Oklahoma City, OK, Shaw Miller of Lawrence, Kansas, Jennifer (Brady) Blake of Abeline, Kansas, and Blair Miller and Tara (Jacob) Johnson of Rapid City; and 6 Great grandchildren.

Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his father on August 10, 1975, his mother on December 13, 1996, his wife, his brother (John A. Miller), and one grandson (Cole Miller).

Casketbearers will be Richard’s grandchildren.
