Ernest W. Beyers, 96, Roscoe, SD, died Monday, July 2, 2012 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen, SD. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, July 6, 2012 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Roscoe, with Rev. Winfried Schroeder leading the service. Burial, with military graveside rites by the Andrew and Harold Schauer American Legion Post No. 259, Roscoe, SD., will follow at Morningside Cemetery, Roscoe. Organist be Carol Schroeder and the congregation will sing “Great is Thy Faitfulness” and “Day by Day”. Soloist Anna Schroeder will sing “On Eagle’s Wings” and “Go now in Peace”. Ushers will be Allen Beyers and David Beyers.

Visitation will be at Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle, from 2:00-9:00 PM Thursday with family present from 6:00-8:00 PM.

Ernest William Beyers, son of Marie (Schurr) and Albert Beyers, was born at his parent’s farm in Montpelier TWSHP 5 miles E and 3 miles S of Roscoe on December 4, 1915. This is where he was raised and attended rural school. He also attended the School of Agriculture in Brookings, SD for four years and returned to the farm. Prior to enlisting in the military, Ernest attended Tech School at Santa Monica, CA in the aircraft assembly and riveting program. Ernest served his country in the United States Army, being inducted February 7, 1942. He did general clerical work at the US Army Hospital and then served overseas in the European Theatre of Operations for 18 months. Ernest earned the American Theatre Service Medal, the European, African, Middle Eastern Theatre Service medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged January 25, 1946 and returned to the farm. Ernest married Anna Mischke at the Emanuel Ev. Lutheran Church near Grover, SD on June 20, 1946. They settled on Ernest’s home farm. Anna died January 18, 2004. Ernest remained on the farm until September 2007 when he relocated to the Westwood Assisted Living Center in Roscoe. Since February 2011, he had lived at the Golden LivingCenter of Ipswich, SD. He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Roscoe where he served the council as an Elder and as Chairman. Ernest belonged to the Roscoe Legion Post, he was on the Cenex Board of Directors for 21 years, and served on the Montpelier TWSHP Board for many years. Ernest took great pride and joy in farming and his family. He especially cherished the time spent with his grandchildren.

Ernest is survived by two sons—Russell (Arvis) Beyers and Melvin (Jan) Beyers all of Roscoe; one daughter Eileen (Tom) Schultz of Worthington, MN; eight grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; brother-in-law Helmuth Kirschenmann of Ipswich; and sister-in-law Ruth Beyers of Aberdeen.

He was preceded in death by his father on June 11, 1972, his mother on April 18, 1980, his wife, one brother (Raymond), and two sisters (Neva Kirschenmann and Helen Downer).

Honorary bearers will be Jen Dickman of Littleton, CO, Rebecca Beyers and Heidi Preszler of Roscoe, Tracey Spielmann of Castle Pines, CO, Holly Conroy of Sioux Falls, SD, Heather Morrell of Whitefish, MT, Becky Portlock of Summerset, SD, and Natalie Schultz of Denver, CO.

Casketbearers will be Chad Beyers and Jason Preszler of Roscoe, Kevin Morrell of Whitefish, Mike Conroy of Sioux Falls, Brad Spielmann of Castle Pines, Lance Portlock of Summerset, and James Dickman of Littleton.

Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements.
