Eugene Pietz, 85, Bowdle, died Sunday, July 8, 2012 at his residence after being diagnosed with cancer the fall of 2011. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, July 13, 2012 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Roscoe, SD, with Pastor Winfried Schroeder leading the service. Interment follows at Morningside Cemetery, Roscoe. Organist will be Carol Schroeder and the congregation will sing “Asleep in Jesus”, “What a Friend we have in Jesus”, “How great Thou Art”, and “Amazing Grace”. Ushers will be Melvin Himmerich and Duane Haar.

Visitation will be from noon-9:00 PM Thursday at Lien Funeral Home and resumes 9:00 AM Friday at the Church.

Eugene Pietz, son of Sindanna (Bashans) and August Pietz, was born October 22, 1926 at Hosmer, SD. Eugene’s dad died when he was only 12 and he moved with his mother to Bowdle. He received his formal education at Hosmer and Bowdle. He then worked for his uncle on the farm. He married Delores Heiser on October 27, 1949 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bowdle. They farmed at different places in Edmunds County and they also owned a trucking business. They retired from farming in 1997 and moved into Bowdle. Eugene retired from trucking in 1998 due to health reasons. He enjoyed cutting his and his neighbors lawns as well as doing some farm work (to get out in the country). He also enjoyed fishing with Delores.

Mr. Pietz is survived by his wife of 62 years, Delores; two sons—Darrell Pietz of Aberdeen, SD and Doane Pietz of Watertown, SD; one daughter Elaine (Ken) Kappenman of Bismarck, ND; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father on January 1, 1939, his mother on February 2, 1983, and one brother (Marvin).

Honorary bearers will be Eugene’s great grandchildren Morgan, Courtney, and Ethan Lewandowski; Austin and Sierra Burgad; Khurz, Kolt, and Camdyn Kappenman; and Thayden Pietz.

Casketbearers will be Eugene’s grandchildren—Jennifer Lewandowski of Summit, SD, Shane Pietz of Aberdeen, Shannon Burgad of Beulah, WY, Corey Kappenman of Valley City, ND, Dana Kappenman of LaMoure, ND, and James Pietz of Watertown.

Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements.
